UC-II, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
Arthritis afflicts millions if people around the world. Most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis of the knee and hip is a growing health concern and is the most common forms of arthritis.[5,6,7]
Studies have shown that undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) is effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and preliminary human and animal trials have shown it to be also effective in treating osteoarthritis.[4]
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study on UC-II colagen
A group of scientists conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in healthy volunteers about undenatured type II collagen (UC-II®) for joint support. [1,2]
In a 120-day clinical trial, 55 healthy volunteers who experienced knee pain after a standardized endurance test were randomly assigned to the UC-II group or to the placebo group. The UC-II group received 40 mg of undenatured type II collagen every day for 120 days.[1,2]
Daily supplementation with 40 mg UC-II was well tolerated and didn't caused any adverse effects. A daily dose of 40 mg of UC-II improved knee extension in healthy volunteers. Moreover, UC-II has also shown the potential to prolong pain-free periods of intense exercise and alleviate joint pain that sometimes occurs as a result of such activity. [1,2]
