Thyroid  

Thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck. It produces the necessary hormones for the body : thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones regulate metabolism, proper functions of internal organs, heart function and cholesterol levels, as well as body weight, muscle strength and memory. Thyroxine (T4) is responsible for the proper function of the sexual glands and the cardiovascular system, it also takes part in a series of metabolic changes in the body, and the most important of these is the transformation of triiodothyronine (T3), which in turn is responsible for the proper functioning of the nervous system and the brain. Insufficient amount of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) is manifested, inter alia, by weight gain, deterioration of skin, hair and nails, and depression. Excessive production of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) is manifested by a sudden decrease in weight, hyperactivity of the nerves, excessive sweating and cardiac problems such as accelerated heart rate or heart failure.
